Panel Discussion: How do we respond to the environmental challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and water quality while looking after the economic, social and cultural life of our regions? And how well placed is wellbeing economics to help us answer this question?

The Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa (WEAll), in collaboration with the Government Economics Network and the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, is excited to be hosting an in-person panel discussion with Dr Katherine Trebeck as part of her broader trip to New Zealand.

Dr Trebeck is an international expert on building a new economy that delivers wellbeing by default and will share with New Zealanders how countries around the world are modernising their approaches. Katherine is a political economist, writer and advocate for economic system change. She co-founded the Wellbeing Economy Alliance and also WEAll Scotland, its Scottish hub. You can see more about Katherine’s background here.

Dr Trebeck will be joined by Gareth Hughes, WEAll Aotearoa Director, and Geoff Simmons, the PCE’s Chief Economist. As well as WEAll Aotearoa Director, Gareth is an author, political commentator and serves in governance roles. Geoff’s work focuses a lot on the complexities of rural land use – what’s good for farmers, what’s good for communities, for biodiversity, for Māori, for the climate and for the future generations.

The panel discussion will focus on the question: How do we respond to the environmental challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and water quality while looking after the economic, social and cultural life of our regions? This was the question of a recent PCE report available here Going with the grain: Changing land uses to fit a changing landscape | Parliamentary Commissioner of Environment. Katherine will provide her perspective on how wellbeing economics can contribute towards answering this question, drawing on her most recent report for the Centre for Policy Development (CPD), The Wellbeing Economy in brief cpd.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Wellbeing-Economy-in-Brief.pdf. CPD is an independent, non-partisan policy institute.

The session is intended to be informal with the chance for a discussion with attendees.
